My Favorite Place for Joe

I neglected to include a photo of My Favorite Place for Joe in last week's Small Town tour. I didn't stop there that day, but I did drive by. Here it is on the ground floor of this cool old corner building. It shares the building with a trashy store called That's Phat that bills itself as a premier sexy clothing shop. Click on this picture for a larger view of the "premiere" goods displayed in the window. And people say Small Town isn't diverse.

It's a beautiful building, Robyn. Unfortunately I can't quite make out exactly what they're selling, by clicking on it!

Lynn, they sell pants that look like you have to paint them on and skirts made out of something the size of a dinner napkin, among other things that I suspect are accessorized with whips. I might be wrong.

Mmmmm … Coffee.
Yikes! I clicked on the photo Robyn and I must say I don't think I've ever seen more appalling brickwork in all my years as an architect.
I'd have had them tear it down and rebuild it at their own expense or kicked them off site and got in a proper bricklaying team.
Sheesh!
Don't they have plumb lines in Ohio?
Well, if I'm vere in town I'll be sure to stop in there, Robyn.
and if I EVER learn to stop making typo's....

Happy Birthday To...

Pope Leo IX (the Pope) JCF Bach (German composer) Jane Russell (of Gentlemen Prefer Blonds fame) Daniel Carter Beard (founder of the Boy Scouts of America) Jean-Paul Sartre (French philosopher) Maureen Stapleton (Academy Award winning actress) Mariette Hartley (who?) Prince William of Wales (the prince) but most importantly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 45 years ago today, I was born in Alabama in a small town on the banks of the Tennessee River. Yesterday, someone asked me if my family has any birthday traditions. The answer is no. My family never cared very much, but I do remember a few birthday highlights. I was given a birthday party in the back yard when I was ten years old. Two years later, my sister got married on my birthday, so I was just a bit overlooked, although I did get a stuffed animal--it was a white Yorkshire terrier with an AM radio in its stomach. When I turned 20, a different sister took me to an outdoor performance of Dvorak's New World Sympho...

You Just Never Know

This newspaper gig has brought some interesting things. Because of it, I have met all kinds of people and learned all kinds of things. I have interviewed a potter, a stained glass artist, a horse barn owner, Guatemalan immigrants, winery operators and a woman with two uteruses. That last one may seem odd, but she's one of the few women in the world who has given birth to surviving twins, each developing in its own womb (you can see the adorable kids and read the article here ). I have learned about antique steamer trunks, dandelion wine, the history of steel drums and that people in Papua New Guinea are being evacuated from their island because of rising sea levels. I've read books on the repercussions of factory farming, and I've researched childhood obesity—did you know that Ohio ranks 17th on a list of US states in order of weight? Yet, someone in my own town would comment online suggesting we leave our poor kids alone. The other day I was in a court room to cover a case...

Right Brain Dominant

I am reading A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future , by Daniel H. Pink. I wouldn't have chosen this book had I been book hunting because I lean toward fiction—it was a gift from someone who, like me, is right-brain dominate. I haven't gotten very far, just far enough to learn that in Hippocrates' day, the left side of the brain was considered the true source of thought, the thing that separated us from the animals and made us human. It was the source of reason and logic. The right side was considered a useless left over, a parasite. Now we know that both sides of our brains are equally important and equally involved in our daily thoughts and functions. But some of us do seem to be governed by one side more strongly than the other. Me, sometimes I think the left side of my brain has completely atrophied, that the right side governs everything. But I am learning that I don't give that other side enough credit, that logical mathy side. As I read on ab...
