The Ride

So...like I said, we had a bike ride to join in on Sunday. We couldn't have planned more perfect weather--80 degrees and sunny with blue skies. It was enough to draw a real crowd, and we had about forty people riding about twenty-five bikes of all sorts--Harleys, Hondas, Yamahas, Suzukis, and our BMW.

We all met at the Small Town high school and rumbled out of town on our way to a biker restaurant on a lake somewhere out in the country. I had never heard of the lake before, but it was lovely, about an hour and a half from our starting point. Because the place was packed and the kitchen was understaffed, the stop took twice as long as expected, but everyone had a nice sociable time, and then we rumbled on toward the next stop, a tiny town with an ice cream shop.

At this next stop, I heard the motto that seemed to sum up the day: We ride to eat, and we eat to ride. That about says it all with this bunch. We stopped for ice cream, and because of the time of year, pumpkin ice cream was on the menu, and I was so happy. I have ice cream two or three times a year, and one of those servings needs to be pumpkin for me to be completely satisfied.

Riding on the back of a bike through these tiny towns on old farm roads is always a fascinating way to see what there is to see. I saw a lot of dairy cows. I saw alpaca farms. I saw a Ben Franklin store. I saw a funeral parlor named Sweeny Dodds. I saw a home business called Lilly's Electrolysis.

All in all, it was a great day.

"We ride to eat; we eat to ride".
Hee hee hee.
That's wonderful, Robyn.

And now I'm stuck with the image of you in Marlon Brando's cool hat from The Wild One.

Ben Franklin stores still exist? Ours closed years ago. Perhaps it's because bikers around here seem to live to drink and drink to ride. They should eat instead.

We have a funeral parlour in Norwich (93, Oak Street if anyone's desperate) called the "George Bush Funeral Home".

Here are pictures of it:

Good old George. He puts the "fun" in funerals.

Pumpkin Icecream? Now I've heard everything, although I've seen recipes for pumpkin scones. I thought that pistaccio icecream was as far out as it gets. We have wonderful gelato and icecream bars all over the place here and in summer everyone eats icecream. It's standard fare for a dessert trimmer here - with strawberries, or forest fruits or apple or apricot or (if you can get it) rhubarb pie. As for odd names, Maria's Meme yesterday was a hoot too!

Happy Birthday...

to me! Update: Since you have asked, I only got one actual packaged gift, a beautiful hand-made bracelet from a friend, but both girls were home for the weekend, and we had dinner at the lake and a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all of you for your lovely wishes!

My Sitemeter is All Bloated and Not Quite Itself

I'm tempted to let it sit on the couch with its feet curled up under a blanket, a hot cup of coffee in hand, a block of cherry almond bark Chocolove within reach, and An Affair to Remember spinning in the DVD player. I'm one of those obsessive bloggers, the kind who checks her sitemeter as often as possible throughout the day, the kind who gauges the quality of her writing by the number of readers who regularly stop by. I've become less interested in the overall number of hits and more interested in the number of repeat hits. The return visitors are the ones I long for. When my sitemeter reads forty at the end of the day, and the majority of those hits are webpals who have conversed, I'm happy. Forty may seem low to many of you, but I've only been at this since August. To me, forty is a jackpot. A few days ago, I sat down at my laptop and discovered a number somewhere in the eighties. Eighties! Yippee! Yeeha ! Hoo-rah ! I've been discovered by the webworld , o...

Ish People

Tell an Ish person to show up around 9 a.m., and you'll see them somewhere around 9 a.m. Tell them to show up at 9ish, and you'll see them anywhere from 9:05 to 9:20. You have given them license to dilly dally, and who wouldn't take advantage of that? The other night at the big shindig dinner party, one of the drummers said the rehearsal the next morning would begin at 9ish. "I am an ish person," he says. Immediately the clanker goes off in my head--oh, good, I thought. I can deliver my daughter a little late. No Ish person is early, so if you say 9ish, that does not mean give or take 5, 10, 15 minutes. It's exclusively a taking phrase. Take an extra 10 minutes to drink your cup of coffee. We won't mind. We're Ish people. Sunday's rehearsal started at 2:00. Because it was conducted by the same people who conducted the Saturday rehearsal, my understanding was 2-ISH. My daughter is worse than I am about taking liberties with Ish time frames, so she d...
