Missing the Mark

So, Israel wants to improve their image as a tourist destination for men ages 18 to 38, hoping to appear hip and appealing instead of full of conflict and danger. How does a nation go about changing their reputation, I ask? Maybe they could launch a campaign featuring their cultural heritage--their world-class symphonies and ballet. Maybe they could send around film footage of breathtaking landscapes with unmatched historical significance or show us their lovely beaches and interesting places to visit. Turkey has a campaign like that, and all the pretty pictures almost make you forget about the squashed human rights and their disdain for non-Muslims.

Well, those are some things I would do if I were in charge of boosting the reputation of a volatile country. But Israel has decided, instead, that they will improve their world image if they take some of their prettiest and sexiest women soldiers, women who have supposedly thrived and achieved notable accomplishments while in the military, and pose them in bikinis in an issue of Maxim.

They have decided to take people with brains and ambition and abilities to truly shape the future and reduce them to base tits and ass. They have chosen to minimize the value of attractive women for the sake of superficial visual appeal. And the women who agreed to pose for these pictures are accomplices.

Now, the women in the Knesset are mifted. These are women who have chosen to live by their brains and character, and their government has just dismissed them. What a brilliant idea. A quote from Zahava Gal-On, Knesset member:

"It's unfortunate that the Israeli consulate chose to emphasize Israel's relevance with a portrait of a half-naked woman, instead of with one of women of substance and accomplishments."

Really?
I missed that one.
They'd do themselves a great deal more good if they got the hell out of the occupied territories.
Maybe they're trying to be more like the U.S. After all a lot of people from abroad think most women in the U.S. are like Paris Hilton do they not?

Sometimes I wonder if women are gaining ground or losing it in the fight against sexism and gender bias.

Yikes, Rich!
Give me Robyn over Paris Hilton any day.

Rich, this is the kind of story that makes you think we're LOSING ground.

Dive, I would be flattered except I remember a comment chain a few months ago when someone said "Paris Hilton," and you said, "Who?" You didn't even know who she was. Thanks anyway, though.

She's been all over the newspapers since, with her stupid jail story.
I'm just sorry you were pitted against such poor opposition.
Rich is right; most folk over here only see the vacuous "celebs" and not the real women.
Nancy Pelosi: that one would be closer but you'd still pip her at the post (hee hee).

Sex sells for one reason, we buy into it.

You mean I have to buy it? No wonder I never get any …

I get so pissed off at women who agree to do these things.

That's infuriating. And very, very odd.
Dive - Yes Robyn is what American women are all about pay no attention to the media sensationlizing sluts like Paris Hilton.

Also, there is an idealology by a cretain group of people in the fashion industry here in the U.S.- Their goal is to sell to sell clothing to young girls that makes them look like little whores. As long as they make profits doing so It's all they care about.

My Sitemeter is All Bloated and Not Quite Itself

I'm tempted to let it sit on the couch with its feet curled up under a blanket, a hot cup of coffee in hand, a block of cherry almond bark Chocolove within reach, and An Affair to Remember spinning in the DVD player. I'm one of those obsessive bloggers, the kind who checks her sitemeter as often as possible throughout the day, the kind who gauges the quality of her writing by the number of readers who regularly stop by. I've become less interested in the overall number of hits and more interested in the number of repeat hits. The return visitors are the ones I long for. When my sitemeter reads forty at the end of the day, and the majority of those hits are webpals who have conversed, I'm happy. Forty may seem low to many of you, but I've only been at this since August. To me, forty is a jackpot. A few days ago, I sat down at my laptop and discovered a number somewhere in the eighties. Eighties! Yippee! Yeeha ! Hoo-rah ! I've been discovered by the webworld , o...

Happy Birthday...

to me! Update: Since you have asked, I only got one actual packaged gift, a beautiful hand-made bracelet from a friend, but both girls were home for the weekend, and we had dinner at the lake and a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all of you for your lovely wishes!

Ish People

Tell an Ish person to show up around 9 a.m., and you'll see them somewhere around 9 a.m. Tell them to show up at 9ish, and you'll see them anywhere from 9:05 to 9:20. You have given them license to dilly dally, and who wouldn't take advantage of that? The other night at the big shindig dinner party, one of the drummers said the rehearsal the next morning would begin at 9ish. "I am an ish person," he says. Immediately the clanker goes off in my head--oh, good, I thought. I can deliver my daughter a little late. No Ish person is early, so if you say 9ish, that does not mean give or take 5, 10, 15 minutes. It's exclusively a taking phrase. Take an extra 10 minutes to drink your cup of coffee. We won't mind. We're Ish people. Sunday's rehearsal started at 2:00. Because it was conducted by the same people who conducted the Saturday rehearsal, my understanding was 2-ISH. My daughter is worse than I am about taking liberties with Ish time frames, so she d...
