Four Eyes

I bought myself a pair of drug-store reading glasses. All of my life, so far, I have had not just perfect eye sight but super perfect eye sight. I can read a road sign from miles away. I can read the bottom line of the chart from across the room with a flock of geese flying by. I can make out the fine print on the back of the most detailed insurance forms.

But now in my 40s, my eyes have decided they don't want to read the close-up things without added fuzz, and they don't want to focus automatically when they should. They are rebelling, or maybe they are just tired of my bragging and boasting. So, I bought a cheap pair of reading specs--$12.99--black frames with gold dots--I thought they should at least be cool. But now that I have them, I seem to be avoiding close-up reading so I won't have to wear them. My computer is at least a foot away, and my music stand is even farther.

Also, after confessing that I have the ability to flare my nostrils at will, I am self-conscious about the size of my nose, so I did some careful cropping on this shot.

Sigh~~~~~~~~~Hi Robyn! Morning! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn....brrrrrrrrrrr...a little nippy here this morning.

I'm joining you...had to succumb to some "Dr. Dean Edell's" (local tv doc who has an eyeglass line) from my local drugstore about 4 years ago now...wah~

My boys would shove their homework papers in my face, not more than five inches from my eyes, and expect me to read it! Just wasn't working!

I started with the "125" rating/magnification and just last week moved up into "175s!" EEEEK!

Wonder just how far I'll need to go before I have to start wearing the bottom of those glass Coke bottles!

LOL! Very cute picture by the way...and we ALL have imperfections so you just let go of that "I-don't-like-my-insert-body-par-here" crap!

:)

Woohoo!
Those are COOL and SEXY, Robyn!
Very much the Lisa Loeb look.

Rats! Now I want to go out and buy new glasses.

They tell me that after being nearly blind since third grade that eventually my eyeballs will change shape and I will be able to see fine. Still hasn't happened, probably I'll have to wait another ten years or so.

I like the glasses, they're very retro! But if you've never had to wear them, I could see how it would be very hard to get used to.

...strange british male thinks my mother's reading glasses are sexy...

oh, okay.

Daughter #1, maybe it's similar to the way Grandpa used to describe a well-crafted staircase rail.

Hello Utsav. It's great what you can do with black and white and laying in Photoshop. I am very unphotogenic.

Daughter #1 again, I am very unphotographic.

Gina, it's a shame you can't even count on the shape of your eyeballs.

Dive, flattery. Sheer flattery.

Hi Ame. These are 125. There are some pretty funky options on the drugstore spinner rack. If I ever have to have another pair, I think I'll go for the ones that are hand painted with a dozen different colors, like Mary Engelbreit greeting cards.

Flattery, schamttery.
I'm sure you only posted this becasue you know I like the look (hee hee).

Oops. Typo hell again.
Maybe I DO need new glasses.

Speaking of typos, I see I severely mistyped in my reply to Utsav. I meant LAYERING in Photoshop--the technique of blending several layers to achieve a desired effect.
Size of your nose is just fine. Good specs, there. You're looking more bookish - watch out, Dive's about...!

Those are cute!

I'm blind as a bat, but my mother has perfect eyesight at age 58. My damn dad....
hey Robyn - I think those glasses make you look like a sexy school teacher ;>)

Join the club with the vision stuff going on. I need glasse to read anything these days not just the fine print anymore.
You have laughing eyes...

No More Mr. Nice Guy

It's good to be a nice person--to say nice things, to do nice things, to write nice things--but I declare an end to the use of the word nice. Nice is what you say when you can't think of any other adjective. Someone shows you a picture of their back yard--that's nice. Someone tells you about their afternoon adventure--that's nice. Or someone describes their childhood in great detail and sometimes with painstaking effort--that's nice. It's a lazy word, and it's non-descriptive. Nice is like mashed potatoes with noodles and chicken gravy all in a big pile on one plate with some canned corn for garnish. Everything is the same color and texture and base substance--starch (this is a favorite Amish dish). Nice is like a partly cloudy day in April when outside feels like inside, and you can't tell a difference between the lighting and the temperature of your living room and the lighting and temperature of your front yard. Nice is a glass of lukewarm water. ...

Ish People

Tell an Ish person to show up around 9 a.m., and you'll see them somewhere around 9 a.m. Tell them to show up at 9ish, and you'll see them anywhere from 9:05 to 9:20. You have given them license to dilly dally, and who wouldn't take advantage of that? The other night at the big shindig dinner party, one of the drummers said the rehearsal the next morning would begin at 9ish. "I am an ish person," he says. Immediately the clanker goes off in my head--oh, good, I thought. I can deliver my daughter a little late. No Ish person is early, so if you say 9ish, that does not mean give or take 5, 10, 15 minutes. It's exclusively a taking phrase. Take an extra 10 minutes to drink your cup of coffee. We won't mind. We're Ish people. Sunday's rehearsal started at 2:00. Because it was conducted by the same people who conducted the Saturday rehearsal, my understanding was 2-ISH. My daughter is worse than I am about taking liberties with Ish time frames, so she d...

Long Live Anita Bowser

You know I occasionally check my hometown newspaper's website to scan the obituaries (morbid, I know, but I'm at that age). Over this past weekend, I read the obituary of Indiana State Senator Anita Bowser . She was a noted Democrat who championed causes protecting the neediest in the state's population. She was respected on both sides of the aisle for her intelligence and plain and outspoken approach to law making. The picture on her senate page is lovely. I remember none of those things about Anita Bowser . My first year or so in college was spent at a branch of Purdue University, and in the early 80s, Anita was a political science professor. She taught my American Government class my freshman year, and she was a mess. Somewhere in my old text book, I have a sketch of her drawn on a particularly dull day in class--her hose sagged at her ankles, her slip showed at least half an inch all the way around, her hair had been slept on but not brushed, and her bright red lip stic...
