Outside Looking In

In keeping with today's theme for Saturday's Photo Scavenger Hunt--Windows:

From the inside, this window in my living room is warm and welcoming, nice to look through. But on the outside looking in, on a cold November day, it's anything but welcoming, especially from this angle. Someone standing on the outside looking up can't even see in. They can't feel the surfaces that are softer than brick. They can't smell the simmering curry or pet the cats or listen to some James Taylor. And they can't settle in on the big, comfy couch while hugging a pillow in their arms, as people are prone to do--that's why couches have pillows, afterall.

Don't be so hard on bricks, Robyn (said the grumpy old architect).
Go out walking on a crisp, sunny winter's afternoon. Find a lovely old red brick barn (or any nice old brick wall) and press your hands againt it.
Old bricks are crumbly and really surprisingly warm in winter sunshine. Mmmm … Like little blocks of sunshine for cold hands.

Dive, I like brick, personally, but for some people my house looks daunting--it's kind of big and sprawling, and I have this idea that if it were covered with siding of some kind, it might look like less.

It's the modest Midwest attitude in me--in the Midwest, it's nice to be nice, and it's nice to not look like you've got more. Garrison Keilor did a beautiful sketch on that once.

Oh, and "little blocks of sunshine" is very poetic. Cute, even.

I love your window! And don't discount the privacy bit. That's nice.

What's this about a scavenger hunt? I'm afraid I didn't quite get it.

Curry! Cats! James Taylor!

That's three for three for my ideal autumn afternoon...

Mmmm...I love brick, and the thought of James Taylor and a cozy couch just makes me want to cocoon in my own living room/den.
Which part of the MidWest? I'm in Wisconsin.

OK, my internet has gone funky, so I'm catching up here.

Sassy, I stumbled on a meme site that assigns a photo topic every Saturday. Today's topic is windows.

Sasha, welcome. Autumn is my favorite season, and I like to milk it for all it's worth.

Daisy, welcome as well. Cocoon is the perfect word for it. I'm in central Ohio.
Cool pic and angle!

Mine's up too :)
from a photgraphy standpoint: i like this shot and the "cold look" to it. It typifies November. I like it.

Thanks, Rich. I know nothing about photography. The color version was so unpleasant I changed this to gray scale. Then I played with the contrast in Photoshop, which I think a real photographer could do with just his/her camera.

That is a very nice shot. I don't think it's daunting at all.

Cindy Loo Who In October

What is it with people and Cindy Loo Who? Of my last one hundred blog hits, forty have been direct visits from regular readers, and fifteen have been as a result of people searching for "Cindy Loo Who," the little pixie from Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas . A couple of years ago, I posted an image of the original Seuss illustration as compared to the TV cartoon image, and for some reason, that post is bringing in the crowds, relatively. Maybe it's the weather. It isn't even November yet, and already we've had frost and have had to dust off our winter coats. When it gets cold like this, I start to think about Christmasy things like listening to Nat King Cole and decorating the tree. It's ironic because I am offended when retailers start pushing holiday stuff early, but I don't mind my own private celebrations. When my sister and I were much younger and still living with our parents, we would pick a day in July, close the curtains to darken the ...

Prince William of Wales (the prince) but most importantly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 45 years ago today, I was born in Alabama in a small town on the banks of the Tennessee River. Yesterday, someone asked me if my family has any birthday traditions. The answer is no. My family never cared very much, but I do remember a few birthday highlights. I was given a birthday party in the back yard when I was ten years old. Two years later, my sister got married on my birthday, so I was just a bit overlooked, although I did get a stuffed animal--it was a white Yorkshire terrier with an AM radio in its stomach. When I turned 20, a different sister took me to an outdoor performance of Dvorak's New World Sympho...
