Words of the Day No. 3

Words I like:

  • Verdant
  • Ferocious
  • Bramble
  • Wispy
  • Paltry
  • Rigamarole
  • Swell--as in "gee, that's swell."

Words I can't abide (I can only think of one today, although I'm sure Old Knudson could think of a few that would make my eyes roll back into my head--post 'em on your own site, if you do, Old Man):

  • Pustule

Words are lovely;
squelch
platypus
wheedle
umbrage
genefluct
bouzinhas (not sure if I've spelt it right, but Ana always pronounced it boo-zin-yash[with a soft 's']) - a Portuguese word for little kisses around the edge of the lips, and probably my favourite word in any language.

Pustule made me go Eww!

Republican is an odd one. In your country it means right wing; in mine, it means a socialist and anti- monarchist. Which leaves me - as a crusty old socialist republican - in a bit of a quandary (another nice word).

These are great additions to the word list. Thanks!! I especially like the Portuguese word, although I hadn't thought about including non-English words to the list.

An Anti-monarchist? Really? My husband and I have been to London twice, and on the first visit while standing outside Buckingham Palace, I saw a small group of anti-monarchist protestors, and that was the first time it occurred to me that some of you might not appreciate your royal family. Interesting. Americans didn't like theme either.

I've nothing against them personally, in fact as individuals, they're rather amusing.
It's just the old lefty loathing of "un-earned privilege" that gets me.
My brother says to pass on the word "axolotl" to you. He likes your word list.

I love the word phantasmagoric. I hate the wrod undulating.

Dive: salamander? interesting. One of the few words I can remember from my trip to Brazil is lagatisha (probably misspelled). Try that on one of your Brazilian coffee girls. "eo quero lagatisha un cafe. Obliglato."

Sassy: Yes, undulating is a terrible word and conjures up horrible images--creature from the Black Lagoon kinds of images.

Ah, lagartixa; those lovely little geckos that climb up the bedroom walls at night and freak you out.
Uma café da lagartixa is probably not what I'll be starting the week with tomorrow. A bit too wriggly …

Dive: that's it. I knew I was spelling it wrong. I also spelled "thank you" wrong but I can't find my Portuguese/English dictionary.

Obrigado (for me); obrigada (for you).

Long Live Anita Bowser

You know I occasionally check my hometown newspaper's website to scan the obituaries (morbid, I know, but I'm at that age). Over this past weekend, I read the obituary of Indiana State Senator Anita Bowser . She was a noted Democrat who championed causes protecting the neediest in the state's population. She was respected on both sides of the aisle for her intelligence and plain and outspoken approach to law making. The picture on her senate page is lovely. I remember none of those things about Anita Bowser . My first year or so in college was spent at a branch of Purdue University, and in the early 80s, Anita was a political science professor. She taught my American Government class my freshman year, and she was a mess. Somewhere in my old text book, I have a sketch of her drawn on a particularly dull day in class--her hose sagged at her ankles, her slip showed at least half an inch all the way around, her hair had been slept on but not brushed, and her bright red lip stic...

Happy Birthday...

to me! Update: Since you have asked, I only got one actual packaged gift, a beautiful hand-made bracelet from a friend, but both girls were home for the weekend, and we had dinner at the lake and a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all of you for your lovely wishes!

My Sitemeter is All Bloated and Not Quite Itself

I'm tempted to let it sit on the couch with its feet curled up under a blanket, a hot cup of coffee in hand, a block of cherry almond bark Chocolove within reach, and An Affair to Remember spinning in the DVD player. I'm one of those obsessive bloggers, the kind who checks her sitemeter as often as possible throughout the day, the kind who gauges the quality of her writing by the number of readers who regularly stop by. I've become less interested in the overall number of hits and more interested in the number of repeat hits. The return visitors are the ones I long for. When my sitemeter reads forty at the end of the day, and the majority of those hits are webpals who have conversed, I'm happy. Forty may seem low to many of you, but I've only been at this since August. To me, forty is a jackpot. A few days ago, I sat down at my laptop and discovered a number somewhere in the eighties. Eighties! Yippee! Yeeha ! Hoo-rah ! I've been discovered by the webworld , o...
