Tell Me About the Rabbits, George

Intriguing, I think, this idea of mixing up Mel Brooks with classic literature. What if he were to recreate Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights? MacBeth or Oliver Twist?

What if Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder were to team up again with a revised version of Of Mice and Men? Gene Wilder would be George, the smarter caring but cautious friend, and Rick Moranis would be Lenny, constantly asking for stories of rabbits and forever petting dead mice he keeps stock-piled in his pockets.

I'm not sure who would be cast in the role of Curly or his wife, who of course would not be killed--send suggestions. And, of course, Lenny would not be shot in the head at the end--he'd end up...hmm...I'm not sure. We'll have to give his future some thought. Or we'll have to leave that to Mel Brooks.

You do come up with the most wonderful ways of entertaining our office staff. Current thinking on this one is:

Gene Wilder would be perfect for George, but Rick Moranis as Lenny? That's a strange one, although as John Malkovich has kind of spoiled the role, someone as odd as Rick might just work …
Madeline Kahn is sadly no more, but even dug up and propped in a corner would do a better job that Sherilyn Fenn did.
And Mel Brooks himself for Curly.

As we have not yet forgiven Nicholas Cage for the execrable desecration of the Wicker Man, let's have Lenny shoot him in the head (mercy killing). Then a big song and dance finale, like in Zatoichi.

You need to post a big group pic of the office staff so I know who I'm causing to be shiftless and unproductive.

Hmm. I wasn't even thinking of film versions of Mice and Men--I was going straight from the book.

Oh dear. I have horrifying pictures of Steinbeckian musical numbers here.

Sassy, something like
Little bunny foo foo
hopping through the forest
scooping up the field mice
and bopping them on the head

I have a couple of friends who make me feel like Lennie to their George. Maybe I should put myself forward for the part if it's ever available.

That Stella person is me, by the way.

Long Live Anita Bowser

You know I occasionally check my hometown newspaper's website to scan the obituaries (morbid, I know, but I'm at that age). Over this past weekend, I read the obituary of Indiana State Senator Anita Bowser . She was a noted Democrat who championed causes protecting the neediest in the state's population. She was respected on both sides of the aisle for her intelligence and plain and outspoken approach to law making. The picture on her senate page is lovely. I remember none of those things about Anita Bowser . My first year or so in college was spent at a branch of Purdue University, and in the early 80s, Anita was a political science professor. She taught my American Government class my freshman year, and she was a mess. Somewhere in my old text book, I have a sketch of her drawn on a particularly dull day in class--her hose sagged at her ankles, her slip showed at least half an inch all the way around, her hair had been slept on but not brushed, and her bright red lip stic...

My Sitemeter is All Bloated and Not Quite Itself

I'm tempted to let it sit on the couch with its feet curled up under a blanket, a hot cup of coffee in hand, a block of cherry almond bark Chocolove within reach, and An Affair to Remember spinning in the DVD player. I'm one of those obsessive bloggers, the kind who checks her sitemeter as often as possible throughout the day, the kind who gauges the quality of her writing by the number of readers who regularly stop by. I've become less interested in the overall number of hits and more interested in the number of repeat hits. The return visitors are the ones I long for. When my sitemeter reads forty at the end of the day, and the majority of those hits are webpals who have conversed, I'm happy. Forty may seem low to many of you, but I've only been at this since August. To me, forty is a jackpot. A few days ago, I sat down at my laptop and discovered a number somewhere in the eighties. Eighties! Yippee! Yeeha ! Hoo-rah ! I've been discovered by the webworld , o...

Happy Birthday...

to me! Update: Since you have asked, I only got one actual packaged gift, a beautiful hand-made bracelet from a friend, but both girls were home for the weekend, and we had dinner at the lake and a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all of you for your lovely wishes!
