Great Horn Time

I just spent the last two hours at an orchestra rehearsal, getting ready for the Labor Day Concert next Sunday. This concert will be at the same adorable, quaint park the summer band performed in, but the feel will be entirely different.

People will still bring their lawn chairs, and babies will still cry (I have about this much patience for crying babies!), but it's less of a carnival. It's more of a performance--with the conductor wearing a white tux, or sometimes an elaborate vest, if it's a little hot. Our stands are all the same with lights attached for when the sun goes down.

When the band plays, it's a grab bag of stands--whatever people choose to drag in--metal, black, twisted, rusty, whatever. No lights, and defintely no tux on the director. We prefer sweaty t-shirts for band.

Anyway, back to the orchestra. It's a pops concert, which is never my favorite, but it's never so difficult that I chew off a nail with each rehearsal. The only piece on the program that really speaks to me is Brahm's 4th symphony. It's on the program for the October concert, so as a teaser, we're doing the 3rd movement for Labor Day. I'm playing 3rd horn this week, which offers some sweet little solos*, but in the fall, I assume I'll be moved back down to 4th. No solos, but plenty of base clef--yea :/

*I get a little nervous when I play with this group because there are some darn good musicians, and I'm a novice, relatively. But tonight, my tone was golden, and I didn't flake out for my solos--I played the heck out of them and felt so good when I walked off at the end. My friend the pianist commented on the cuteness of my skirt, so I twirled for her to show her how it flares. When I get excited, and I always get excited when I get to play my horn, I tend to lose a little bit of the inhibitions that truly inhibit me any other time.

So, the skirt-twirling is over, and the orchestra has gone home until Saturday morning, and here I sit with tons of energy and nothing to do but type. About the picture: I use a lot of stock photos for my job, and now and then I run across a great Hulton Archive photo that grabs me. This one fit the bill for this post--there will be plenty of others along the way.

This is pianist friend. I was also majorly hyper when I got home from orchestra rehearsal...partly because of the so cool piano part on "Macarthur Park", and partly because of guest kitty cat who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the orchestra, the 2 percussion girls, and me! I actually played several selections from "West Side Story" with guest kitty cat ON MY LAP! He (or she?) finally decided to get down, try to cough up a hairball, and went his (or her?) own way. Kind of miss guest kitty cat this morning...wonder if he (or she?) will be back for Saturday's rehearsal. Have a great day!

Loved the cat. And the massive wasp/stinging insect thing that seems to be drawn to the stage lights. Show business, jeez.
You Go Girl!!! Play that horn!! It's seems to be your zone

Long Live Anita Bowser

You know I occasionally check my hometown newspaper's website to scan the obituaries (morbid, I know, but I'm at that age). Over this past weekend, I read the obituary of Indiana State Senator Anita Bowser . She was a noted Democrat who championed causes protecting the neediest in the state's population. She was respected on both sides of the aisle for her intelligence and plain and outspoken approach to law making. The picture on her senate page is lovely. I remember none of those things about Anita Bowser . My first year or so in college was spent at a branch of Purdue University, and in the early 80s, Anita was a political science professor. She taught my American Government class my freshman year, and she was a mess. Somewhere in my old text book, I have a sketch of her drawn on a particularly dull day in class--her hose sagged at her ankles, her slip showed at least half an inch all the way around, her hair had been slept on but not brushed, and her bright red lip stic...

Happy Birthday...

to me! Update: Since you have asked, I only got one actual packaged gift, a beautiful hand-made bracelet from a friend, but both girls were home for the weekend, and we had dinner at the lake and a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all of you for your lovely wishes!

My Sitemeter is All Bloated and Not Quite Itself

I'm tempted to let it sit on the couch with its feet curled up under a blanket, a hot cup of coffee in hand, a block of cherry almond bark Chocolove within reach, and An Affair to Remember spinning in the DVD player. I'm one of those obsessive bloggers, the kind who checks her sitemeter as often as possible throughout the day, the kind who gauges the quality of her writing by the number of readers who regularly stop by. I've become less interested in the overall number of hits and more interested in the number of repeat hits. The return visitors are the ones I long for. When my sitemeter reads forty at the end of the day, and the majority of those hits are webpals who have conversed, I'm happy. Forty may seem low to many of you, but I've only been at this since August. To me, forty is a jackpot. A few days ago, I sat down at my laptop and discovered a number somewhere in the eighties. Eighties! Yippee! Yeeha ! Hoo-rah ! I've been discovered by the webworld , o...
