The Trout

Last year, Husband and I bought a new washer and dryer set. After doing some research, we chose Samsung because they ranked highest in customer satisfaction and service, and they look great in the laundry room.

They operate as I expected, but what I didn't expect was the chime that comes at the end of the cycle to tell you the machine has finished. The washer and dryer don't just ding or buzz. They play an entire song that I have come to enjoy so that I don't open the door until the final note. Silly, isn't it?

Maybe it's not so silly. Maybe it's nice to have a machine that does something as daily-chore-like as washing and drying clothes do more than ding. It's nice to have a machine that sings to you, that offers a melody to let you know it's time to fold the clothes. I wouldn't mind if more machines in my house communicated with me through melody.

The washer and dryer play a tune based on Schubert's "The Trout." I'd like it if my oven sang "If I Knew You Were Coming, I'd Have Baked A Cake." My coffee maker could chime "Java Jive." I absolutely hate the Toast Song, but it might be nice if my toaster chimed "Minuet In G" or some sweet tune that would be great to hear first thing in the morning.

This isn't a video of my own machine, but this is the song I hear when I do laundry. It lightens the load.

I so want a musical washing machine! Mine just flashes a light at me.
On second thoughts, having watched the video, I'd probably smash the thing with a sledgehammer after a couple of weeks.

I own a Samsung Washing Machine which plays tha very same song, it was a pleasent surprise the very first time i found out that the machine did that. I reckon that it adds a touch of humanity to the thing. however I'm dying to know why did samsung choose that song??

Die Forelle by Franz Schubert!? How did they pick this one? Was there a Schubert fan in the design department. It's cute. You can make up your own song. There should be a contest sponsored by Samsung.

I bought a Samsung washer last year which I love. Yesterday I purchased the dryer and the salesgirl couldn't tell me if it played the tune. So I think my question has been answered. I just hope it does. Tammy

I thought it was All Things Bright and Beautiful and that Samsung were trying to convert me to God on the sly so found it a bit "disconcerting" in that sense. The two tunes are very similar.

The Trout, our dryer song, has come to mean "All finished, job well done. I'm very proud of myself." My husband wants me to play it at his funeral.

In today's edition : I generally try to keep on top of cultural trends even if I don’t adopt them, but there is a growing movement that I have only just discovered. What is it with people and Cindy Loo Who? Of my last one hundred blog hits, forty have been direct visits from regular readers, and fifteen have been as a result of people searching for "Cindy Loo Who," the little pixie from Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas .
