My Kitchen Junk Drawer

Every now and then I take a peek at 1000 Awesome Things, a sweet blog that champions awesome but simple things, like laughing until you cry, finding money in your pocket or watching a movie in the basement with your friends. A few days ago, the site paid tribute to junk drawers, and I was reminded that I have not just one junk drawer but several. In fact, open any drawer in my house, and you're likely to find junk, just stuff no one wants to throw away. I am not a hoarder, but you really do never know when you'll need something.

So, I show you the main junk drawer in my kitchen. Just on the surface without digging around to see what might be rolling around on the bottom of this thing, here is a list of what I see:

• lint removers (2)
• an empty box from a cat pheromone dispenser
• a Cubs baseball
• paint brushes
• a label maker
• decks of cards (at least 2)
• an old wallet
• a roll of packing tape
• two books about frogs, one in English and one in Portuguese
• a Chinese yuan
• a stapler
• a mouth piece brush
• a clay oil lamp from Jerusalem
• scissors
• iPod earbuds
• old photos
• a pair of riding goggles from when I used to ride a scooter
• a Lion King Christmas ornament with a broken leg

To be honest, I had to pick up a stack of paint samples from Lowes and a pad of paper to see this stuff. So, fess up. How many junk drawers do you have, and what sort of crap do you keep stored away in them?

That looks pretty much like my own kitchen junk drawer, Robyn.

Dive, yesterday Eustacia pointed out that I had typed "drunk drawer" in this post, and no one caught it. I fixed it before you got here. hee hee I think I should have left it in because "drunk drawer" makes sense when you look at the photo, don't you think?

And Savannah, yes, one person's junk is another person's treasure.

I have two.

Three.

Six.

I have six junk drawers.

And a junk closet.

And a garage which serves approximately the same purpose for things that a) are too large for a drawer, b) are only used twice a year, or c) are too tight for me to actually, like, wear, but that I'm not willing to send to Good Will. Yet.

Long Live Anita Bowser

You know I occasionally check my hometown newspaper's website to scan the obituaries (morbid, I know, but I'm at that age). Over this past weekend, I read the obituary of Indiana State Senator Anita Bowser . She was a noted Democrat who championed causes protecting the neediest in the state's population. She was respected on both sides of the aisle for her intelligence and plain and outspoken approach to law making. The picture on her senate page is lovely. I remember none of those things about Anita Bowser . My first year or so in college was spent at a branch of Purdue University, and in the early 80s, Anita was a political science professor. She taught my American Government class my freshman year, and she was a mess. Somewhere in my old text book, I have a sketch of her drawn on a particularly dull day in class--her hose sagged at her ankles, her slip showed at least half an inch all the way around, her hair had been slept on but not brushed, and her bright red lip stic...

Happy Birthday...

to me! Update: Since you have asked, I only got one actual packaged gift, a beautiful hand-made bracelet from a friend, but both girls were home for the weekend, and we had dinner at the lake and a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all of you for your lovely wishes!

My Sitemeter is All Bloated and Not Quite Itself

I'm tempted to let it sit on the couch with its feet curled up under a blanket, a hot cup of coffee in hand, a block of cherry almond bark Chocolove within reach, and An Affair to Remember spinning in the DVD player. I'm one of those obsessive bloggers, the kind who checks her sitemeter as often as possible throughout the day, the kind who gauges the quality of her writing by the number of readers who regularly stop by. I've become less interested in the overall number of hits and more interested in the number of repeat hits. The return visitors are the ones I long for. When my sitemeter reads forty at the end of the day, and the majority of those hits are webpals who have conversed, I'm happy. Forty may seem low to many of you, but I've only been at this since August. To me, forty is a jackpot. A few days ago, I sat down at my laptop and discovered a number somewhere in the eighties. Eighties! Yippee! Yeeha ! Hoo-rah ! I've been discovered by the webworld , o...
