I'll tell you what I've done. I've joined the Y.
It all started with my sister. On New Year's Day, of all days, she emailed my other sisters and me, and she suggested we form a family support group to help each other lose weight. Our plan is to weigh in at the end of every month and report our losses (we'll never have to give our exact weight unless we want to), or we can focus on measurements and report lost inches instead of pounds.
At the end of six months, we'll meet up somewhere for a celebratory weekend away. One sister lives near Chicago, and the other two live near Atlanta, so we'll choose a place in the middle...or Maui.
So, I am back on track with paying attention to what I eat and drink, and I have joined the Y. My first day there is today, and I am actually about to leave the house for an initial workout. I'm nervous in new situations and am not wild about walking into that big room full of machines and weights and treadmills when I don't know what's going on. I have belonged to a gym before, so the stuff isn't new to me, but this particular room is.
I know I'll figure it out, and in a few days I'll feel comfortable there. But this first day is the killer.
Here I go.

Hee hee. Sorry, Robyn.
I wish all of you the very best of luck. May the best sister win the weight-loss competition (don't pretend there won't be competition).

The gym bores me rigid. Can't bear it. I'd rather swim but am horribly snobbish in wanting a private membership of somewhere lovely with provided, beautiful towels, uncrowded spaces and a clean cafe with sofas afterwards to relax with a juice. Sigh. I'm trying to work out if I can afford the £40 or so a month this costs to join again. Probably not.
By the way what's the Y? I hardly dare ask and Dive will know why. Pardon the pun.
I said, young (wo)man, what do you want to be?
I said, young (wo)man, you can make real your dreams.
But you got to know this one thing!
No (wo)man does it all by herself.
I said, young (wo)man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the y.w.c.a.
I'm sure they can help you today.
You can do it Robyn!! Though I wouldn't dare assume that song is talking about health and fitness, bits of it can be motivating. haa haa
I am pledging to get a little less mushy around the middle this year as well. It is also just plain good for the old circulation don'tcha know. I think I'll just jump on my mini tramp or do the eliptical and watch a bit of telly for my plan. :) Happy New Year!
Cheri, since we only see each other once a year, it will be fun, I'm sure.
Lynn, the Y is the YMCA. See Shan's lyrics.
Shan, circulation is a problem, so that's one of the things I hope to improve.
I've never been to a gym but I try to make up for it working around the property - plenty of wheeling barrows, collecting firewood, raking and gardening too. Since we don't have winter snow, it is a year-round activity. It's dawn here and I've just been listening to the koalas calling and the birds are waking up. It's going to be another hot, beautiful day here.
BTW I think you should definitely choose Maui to meet up for your celebration. :)
Mme. Don't go. The gym is awful IMO. That garden activity sounds much more pleasant. I'm with you on the chocs, I have lots left. Hmmm what to do, what to do... I might just parcel them up and send them off to my sons for their uni rooms. That's got to be a welcome bag to relieve the baked beans and pasta, hasn't it? :)
