Take It—It's All Yours

We haven't been to the lake house for a while, at least not long enough to use the grill or pull weeds. Sometimes the place looks slightly abandoned. We spent a little time there this past weekend, though. Husband pulled a few weeds, and I washed the linens and dusted a little.

Husband opened up the back door to the deck, and the noise startled the biggest chipmunk I have ever seen. The thing scurried the length of the deck and ran under the grill that sits in the corner. I didn't see it actually leave the deck, so we thought it might have gone inside the grill and not just under it. A few weeks ago, husband found a bird's nest on the grate of the grill, so it's not unreasonable to think a chipmunk might hide in there, too.

When husband tapped on the top of the grill with a broom handle, out ran the chipmunk and down into the grass. Very carefully, husband opened up the lid of the grill, still using the broom handle, and we discovered a nest that could house a baby elephant. There was so much dry grass stuffed on the grate, it nearly filled the entire grill. It must have taken that little rodent days and days to build the thing.

We peaked in this massive nest to find a family of baby chipmunks so new they were still without fur, and their little eyes were closed. So, we did what anyone with heart would do. We carefully closed the lid without touching the nest or the babies and hoped the mother would come back.

She did come back once we stepped inside and stopped poking around. That's one lucky chipmunk mother to have an entire gas grill for raising her babies. It will be interesting to see how this family develops and where they decide to go once they leave the grill nest. I'll just have to use the oven until then.

Unfortunately I didn't have a camera at the time, so I borrowed this photo from some random person online who has apparently held a baby chipmunk.

Aaaahh.
That's so sweet, Robyn!
Hey, I have a recipe for crunchy baby chipmunk baked in grass should you get peckish any time soon …(OW!)
I love chipmunks. I'd rather be surounded by these rodants than a lot of people I know.

HeeHaw-crunchy baby chipmunk. I haven't seen chipmunks around but I have been known to go to heroic lengths to save other bald pink things I've found around my place. It doesn't usually go well but I do follow the no touchie rule when it comes to lost birds and such. ;)

Well, having a soft spot for wildlife myself, I think it's great that you left the little family alone. Good for you!

Kudos to you for giving the family 'space'.

My Sitemeter is All Bloated and Not Quite Itself

I'm tempted to let it sit on the couch with its feet curled up under a blanket, a hot cup of coffee in hand, a block of cherry almond bark Chocolove within reach, and An Affair to Remember spinning in the DVD player. I'm one of those obsessive bloggers, the kind who checks her sitemeter as often as possible throughout the day, the kind who gauges the quality of her writing by the number of readers who regularly stop by. I've become less interested in the overall number of hits and more interested in the number of repeat hits. The return visitors are the ones I long for. When my sitemeter reads forty at the end of the day, and the majority of those hits are webpals who have conversed, I'm happy. Forty may seem low to many of you, but I've only been at this since August. To me, forty is a jackpot. A few days ago, I sat down at my laptop and discovered a number somewhere in the eighties. Eighties! Yippee! Yeeha ! Hoo-rah ! I've been discovered by the webworld , o...

Happy Birthday...

to me! Update: Since you have asked, I only got one actual packaged gift, a beautiful hand-made bracelet from a friend, but both girls were home for the weekend, and we had dinner at the lake and a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all of you for your lovely wishes!

Ish People

Tell an Ish person to show up around 9 a.m., and you'll see them somewhere around 9 a.m. Tell them to show up at 9ish, and you'll see them anywhere from 9:05 to 9:20. You have given them license to dilly dally, and who wouldn't take advantage of that? The other night at the big shindig dinner party, one of the drummers said the rehearsal the next morning would begin at 9ish. "I am an ish person," he says. Immediately the clanker goes off in my head--oh, good, I thought. I can deliver my daughter a little late. No Ish person is early, so if you say 9ish, that does not mean give or take 5, 10, 15 minutes. It's exclusively a taking phrase. Take an extra 10 minutes to drink your cup of coffee. We won't mind. We're Ish people. Sunday's rehearsal started at 2:00. Because it was conducted by the same people who conducted the Saturday rehearsal, my understanding was 2-ISH. My daughter is worse than I am about taking liberties with Ish time frames, so she d...
