More Painting

I have been working on learning how to paint with acrylics and trying to complete at least one small canvas each evening. I bought several 6x9 canvases and have really been going to town.

As a way of practicing brush work and color mixing, I have tried to copy some stock photography I borrowed from Corbis. Here is the first photo:

And here is my copy:

Photo number 2 had too many flowers for me to worry about. Photo:

and copy—had a little trouble finding the blue/green background color,
and then had a little trouble not overdoing the pink in the flowers:

And here is the last one. I have lost the photo, but I kind of made this one up anyway.

I really should start working on my own compositions, but those never work out quite right. What is it they say about accomplished potters and the percentage of pots they throw out because of mistakes? Something like 15 duds for every keeper. I'm making that up, but I'll try not to be discouraged by the canvases that end up in the trash.

Practice makes perfect, Robyn and you're really going at it! I've never seen anyone produce so many paintings in such a short time. And all the time your technique is improving.
Excellent!

Thanks, Dive! Keep in mind these are tiny pictures. I'm not creating murals, yet.

I think they look great! I could never do as well, even with a bunch of practice.
Thing is, with acrylic, don't throw them in the trash; paint over. Just do a whole canvas of white and start again. the texture underneath only adds to the interest. I like the flower ones, especially the pink, and am particularly impressed by your shadowing. Yay!

Gina, if you start with a good outline, it's like coloring in the lines.

Lynn, thanks. I won't throw out the bad'ns then. I have set them aside, but I'll retrieve them and start over.

Lovely Robyn.... by the way the poppies on the surprise cake are on my blog now......try them next they are lovely to paint....also Iris.. I painted one when I was 11 and it got me on a day release to Art School all through my school days, maybe that is where the boys got their skill from.....You have made me get my paints out again by the way.....
You could always look at my art site too Robyn for ideas. You have my permission to copy anything you like - but not for resale! he he. I started by copying.
Your nephew would say that painting over old canvases (like the great self-portrait he did for his mom but secretly wants to obliterate and I still protest) produces interesting and invaluable texture. And you can do it over and over and over again and in the end charge a lot more money for it.

Oh. Now I've read the other comments and I see I'm not the first to bring this up. Oh well...

You are adventuresome...and talented at everything!
so how do you like acrylics Robyn? I like how easy they are to go over mistakes and clean up is great. I don't kow If i could do oil again.
BTW I think you paintings are pretty good. Keep up the good work. You've been doing much more than I recently.

No More Mr. Nice Guy

It's good to be a nice person--to say nice things, to do nice things, to write nice things--but I declare an end to the use of the word nice. Nice is what you say when you can't think of any other adjective. Someone shows you a picture of their back yard--that's nice. Someone tells you about their afternoon adventure--that's nice. Or someone describes their childhood in great detail and sometimes with painstaking effort--that's nice. It's a lazy word, and it's non-descriptive. Nice is like mashed potatoes with noodles and chicken gravy all in a big pile on one plate with some canned corn for garnish. Everything is the same color and texture and base substance--starch (this is a favorite Amish dish). Nice is like a partly cloudy day in April when outside feels like inside, and you can't tell a difference between the lighting and the temperature of your living room and the lighting and temperature of your front yard. Nice is a glass of lukewarm water. ...

Ish People

Tell an Ish person to show up around 9 a.m., and you'll see them somewhere around 9 a.m. Tell them to show up at 9ish, and you'll see them anywhere from 9:05 to 9:20. You have given them license to dilly dally, and who wouldn't take advantage of that? The other night at the big shindig dinner party, one of the drummers said the rehearsal the next morning would begin at 9ish. "I am an ish person," he says. Immediately the clanker goes off in my head--oh, good, I thought. I can deliver my daughter a little late. No Ish person is early, so if you say 9ish, that does not mean give or take 5, 10, 15 minutes. It's exclusively a taking phrase. Take an extra 10 minutes to drink your cup of coffee. We won't mind. We're Ish people. Sunday's rehearsal started at 2:00. Because it was conducted by the same people who conducted the Saturday rehearsal, my understanding was 2-ISH. My daughter is worse than I am about taking liberties with Ish time frames, so she d...

Long Live Anita Bowser

You know I occasionally check my hometown newspaper's website to scan the obituaries (morbid, I know, but I'm at that age). Over this past weekend, I read the obituary of Indiana State Senator Anita Bowser . She was a noted Democrat who championed causes protecting the neediest in the state's population. She was respected on both sides of the aisle for her intelligence and plain and outspoken approach to law making. The picture on her senate page is lovely. I remember none of those things about Anita Bowser . My first year or so in college was spent at a branch of Purdue University, and in the early 80s, Anita was a political science professor. She taught my American Government class my freshman year, and she was a mess. Somewhere in my old text book, I have a sketch of her drawn on a particularly dull day in class--her hose sagged at her ankles, her slip showed at least half an inch all the way around, her hair had been slept on but not brushed, and her bright red lip stic...
