Hard to Find

I was sitting quietly, nibbling a cappuccino-flavored cookie shaped kind of like a flower, when I was overtaken by a sudden image of Salerno Butter Cookies, the delightful cookies of my childhood, the ones with a hole in the middle so you could stick them on your fingers like crispy, baked rings. These cookies keep coming to mind for some reason, so I think I'm meant to buy them. The trouble is, they're so hard to find. They don't have the whiz-bang appeal cookies need to keep them on the grocery store shelves—no chocolate or hidden goo or animal shapes. Kids aren't amused by the simple charm of wearing their cookies like jewelry any more.

You really can find anything online, though, and I have found my long-lost Salerno Butter Cookies at Hometown Favorites. They have an entire hard-to-find grocer where I discovered all kinds of forgotten treats.

I wonder how old this box of cereal is? It can be yours for $4.

No day was complete without a stop at Ben Franklin for a 10¢ Charms pop
or giant wax lips or whistle pops. I'm afraid ordering them online won't have the same appeal as riding to the store on my bike with the neighborhood kids and picking over the candy rack.
I did love those wax lips, though.

Some things are better left hidden, I think.

I wonder, now that I know where to get those little cookies I loved so much, will they taste the same as I remember, or will I just feel stupid with cookies on my fingers?

I think the world needs a photo of our Robyn wearing butter cookie rings and those yummy wax lips!
he he i recall TAB and the whistle lollies and, i think, the butter cookies. What fun to see all these again. Who remembers the Aztec chocolate bar? Yum. They should bring that back.
Hey look at us twinnies, Dive. Same time. Great minds, huh? lol!

We had something called Crax when we were kids. They were corn-based snacks that we used to wear around our fingers and walk around nibbling on them all day. I'd so love to find a pack of those! Or maybe like you said, it's just the novelty of having something from your childhood!
I love scout from to Kill a Mockingbird! I am sure you are not the original, but your depiction of lovely butter cookie rings reminds me of my childhood!

Dive, I'll take a shot as soon as my order arrives.

Lynn, TAB was battery acid in a can. Bleck.

Utsav, I haven't heard of those, but that's something to investigate.

Mermaid, welcome. No, I'm not the original, but I do look like her, don't you think?

I recognised the Tab cans but nothing else Robyn. I loved putting cheesels on my fingers and eating them one by one.

Wax lips were the best. I also liked the lick-em-sticks...but I usually immediately consumed the chalky vanilla stick.
he he Bleck. Love that! Onomatapeia at its best. I do remember drinking some of the stuff, what's more i recall it being in the back of the cinema. Why there, who knows?

Bit of a fiction break over at mine Robyn if you've five mins to put your feet up.

Think i'll be starting that book tonight. I'll report back.
It must be cookie day robyn as I too had a craving for some old favorites.

and butter cookies are boring to kids but things were siplier when we was young eh?
Excuse my typos but you know what I meant ...right???

Quisp? Certainly does not sound like anything I would want to eat.

I miss Tab. It disappeared from our shelves a long time ago.

Right Brain Dominant

I am reading A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future , by Daniel H. Pink. I wouldn't have chosen this book had I been book hunting because I lean toward fiction—it was a gift from someone who, like me, is right-brain dominate. I haven't gotten very far, just far enough to learn that in Hippocrates' day, the left side of the brain was considered the true source of thought, the thing that separated us from the animals and made us human. It was the source of reason and logic. The right side was considered a useless left over, a parasite. Now we know that both sides of our brains are equally important and equally involved in our daily thoughts and functions. But some of us do seem to be governed by one side more strongly than the other. Me, sometimes I think the left side of my brain has completely atrophied, that the right side governs everything. But I am learning that I don't give that other side enough credit, that logical mathy side. As I read on ab...

Ish People

Tell an Ish person to show up around 9 a.m., and you'll see them somewhere around 9 a.m. Tell them to show up at 9ish, and you'll see them anywhere from 9:05 to 9:20. You have given them license to dilly dally, and who wouldn't take advantage of that? The other night at the big shindig dinner party, one of the drummers said the rehearsal the next morning would begin at 9ish. "I am an ish person," he says. Immediately the clanker goes off in my head--oh, good, I thought. I can deliver my daughter a little late. No Ish person is early, so if you say 9ish, that does not mean give or take 5, 10, 15 minutes. It's exclusively a taking phrase. Take an extra 10 minutes to drink your cup of coffee. We won't mind. We're Ish people. Sunday's rehearsal started at 2:00. Because it was conducted by the same people who conducted the Saturday rehearsal, my understanding was 2-ISH. My daughter is worse than I am about taking liberties with Ish time frames, so she d...

Happy Birthday To...

Pope Leo IX (the Pope) JCF Bach (German composer) Jane Russell (of Gentlemen Prefer Blonds fame) Daniel Carter Beard (founder of the Boy Scouts of America) Jean-Paul Sartre (French philosopher) Maureen Stapleton (Academy Award winning actress) Mariette Hartley (who?) Prince William of Wales (the prince) but most importantly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 45 years ago today, I was born in Alabama in a small town on the banks of the Tennessee River. Yesterday, someone asked me if my family has any birthday traditions. The answer is no. My family never cared very much, but I do remember a few birthday highlights. I was given a birthday party in the back yard when I was ten years old. Two years later, my sister got married on my birthday, so I was just a bit overlooked, although I did get a stuffed animal--it was a white Yorkshire terrier with an AM radio in its stomach. When I turned 20, a different sister took me to an outdoor performance of Dvorak's New World Sympho...
