That Meme that Keeps Going Around

1) Where did you begin 2007?: If I recall, I woke up at the lake house where I had celebrated the event with husband and daughters.

2) What was your status on Valentine's Day?: I don't specifically recall the day, but I was married—still am.

3) Were you in school (anytime this year)?: On most Mondays, having a horn lesson at a college and feeling like I didn't quite belong with the early-20-somethings.

4) How did you earn your money?: I did my usual job of designing book covers.

5) Did you have to go to the hospital?: Only to escort Daughter No. 2 for her eco-cardiogram.

6) Did you have any encounters with the police?: Well, actually, I think it was spring of 2007 when I was stopped for speeding but was sent away with only a warning.

7) Where did you go on vacation?: Being a spoiled girl, I went to Paris and London in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter.

8) What did you purchase that was over $1000?: Oh my gosh. Well, let's see. A new French horn, for starters, and then a new bathroom and a new floor for the upstairs.

9) Did you know anybody who got married?: Nope.

10) Did you know anybody who passed away?: My dear friend and neighbor Norma passed away a few days before Thanksgiving. I didn't write about it because it was quite personal, and I was afraid that posting about it on such an otherwise lighthearted blog might trivialize the loss.

12) Did you move anywhere?: Nope.

13) How did you celebrate your birthday?: Hmmm. I don't recall, although I think we may have had dinner at a very cool restaurant.

14) What concerts/shows did you go to?: Besides the many concerts I played in with the orchestra and summer concert band, I went to an Akron symphony concert. That's about it.

15) Are you registered to vote?: Yep.

16) Who did you want to win Big Brother?: I don't watch Big Brother. I barely watch any competition shows like that, except occasionally the final show if I have nothing better to do.

17) Where do you live now?: Where I lived last year—in Small Town in the middle of Ohio.

18) How did you spend your summer break?: Besides working and skimming the pool occasionally, I went to Europe.

19) What's one thing you thought you'd never do but did in 2007?: As I have said, I went to Europe, which I thought I might do, actually, but not this year necessarily. And while on that lovely trip, I met two blogpals—hello, Dive and Alifan.

20) What has been your favorite moment?: Oh, I don't know. I can't name one. I had some fun moments this past year but can't point to just one.

21) What's something you learned about yourself?: I don't get seasick—well, almost, but not all the way, if you know what I mean.

22) Any new additions to your family?: Nope.

23.) What was your worst month?: I didn't have a worst month.

24.) What music will you remember 2007 by?: I'll probably remember the horn concertos I have worked on—Beethoven and Haydn.

25) Who has been your best drinking buddy? I'm not much of a drinker, but I have enjoyed occasional wine-meetings with my friend Joan.

26) Made new friends?: the little girl who taught me the phrase "make new friends."

27) New best friend?: I have not made a new best friend. In fact, I don't think I have a "best" friend. I have several very good ones, though.

28) Favorite night out?: New Years was cool off the coast of Jamaica, but I also get such a high from orchestra nights. I can't name one really stand-out night as my favorite.

29) What sporting events did you attend?: I went to a few Indians games this year, although not nearly as many as last year. Sometimes they suck.

30) What was your best month?: Well, if I didn't have a worst month, then why would I have a best month?

31) Overall, how would you rate 2007 out of 10?: uhhhhh, I guess an 8.

32) Other than home, where did you spend most of your time?: At work, and driving in between.

33) Did you change your hairstyle?: Nope. Same cut I have had for a few years. It works.

34) Have any car accidents?: Not this year, for a change, nor anyone in my family, for a change.

35) Did you have a New Year's resolution?: Nope, unless you count the desire to volunteer.

36) Do anything embarrassing?: I'm sure, but I can't think of anything specific. I try to forget those moments as quickly as possible.

37) Buy anything new from eBay?: I have only bought a few things from eBay, and not in a few years. I bought a French horn on eBay once, and then sold one, but that's about it.

38) Get married?: Nope.

39) Get arrested?: Nope.

40) Be honest - did you watch American Idol?: OK, honestly, on occasion, but not as voraciously as most.

41) Did you get sick in 2007?: Two bouts with bronchitis, as usual.

42) Been snowboarding?: Never. I love snow, but playing in it, especially going down hill, is scary.

43) Are you happy to see 2007 go?: Yep. Onward and upward, I always say. Actually, I don't know that I have ever said that word for word, but I think it sometimes.

I haven't changed my hair style in a few years either and I also don't have a drinking buddy.

So, wanna go get our hair cut and get smashed? Might be blogworthy....

Maria, two drinks is my typical limit, and most of my hair is no more than 1 inch long as it is, but other than that... Hey, I just started reading Anne Lamott's Grace Eventually. She's brilliant, that one.

Hello, Robyn.
Meeting you in London was definitely a high point for me. I love it when blogs collide.
You never told me you got stopped for speeding! You rebel! Hee hee. You must have had a really exciting horn part on the car radio.
I wonder what you've got planned for this coming year?
Interesting, Robyn. Speeding huh? Well well. Your hair does suit you.
I've done this meme at my Things blog. I admit to enjoying reading and doing them!

Cindy Loo Who In October

What is it with people and Cindy Loo Who? Of my last one hundred blog hits, forty have been direct visits from regular readers, and fifteen have been as a result of people searching for "Cindy Loo Who," the little pixie from Seuss's How The Grinch Stole Christmas . A couple of years ago, I posted an image of the original Seuss illustration as compared to the TV cartoon image, and for some reason, that post is bringing in the crowds, relatively. Maybe it's the weather. It isn't even November yet, and already we've had frost and have had to dust off our winter coats. When it gets cold like this, I start to think about Christmasy things like listening to Nat King Cole and decorating the tree. It's ironic because I am offended when retailers start pushing holiday stuff early, but I don't mind my own private celebrations. When my sister and I were much younger and still living with our parents, we would pick a day in July, close the curtains to darken the ...

Classic Green Bean Bake

In anticipation of Thanksgiving, I feel I must post a recipe with plenty of good old American tradition. The classic Green Bean Bake was invented in 1955 by Dorcas Reilly, a home economist who worked for the Campbell's Soup Company. A study was done determining that 50% of all Americans have eaten the classic Green Bean Bake, and 38% of those believe it is best served during the holidays, mainly Thanksgiving. So, for the other 50% and for those in other countries where this dish may be unfamiliar--my treat: The Classic Green Bean Bake serves 6 to 8 1 can Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup 1/2 cup milk 1 teaspoon soy sauce Dash of fresh pepper 1 20-oz. bag frozen cut green beans, thawed* 1 2.8 oz can French-fried onions -Preheat the oven to 350 F -In a casserole dish, combine the soup, milk, soy sauce and pepper. Stir in the green beans and half of the onions. -Bake until bubbling, about 25 minutes. Top with the remaining onions and bake for 5 more minutes. Serve hot. *Or cook 1 ...
