Vacation Part 2--Dive and Mum

We spent a full week in London, but I know you want to hear about meeting Dive and Mum. They have both already written about our visit and posted pictures, so I'll add a few pictures they don't have. Daughter no. 2 was good enough to operate the camera.

Here we are on the steps of the Tate.

Here are our shoes on the steps of the Tate.

We really did have a lovely time together--meandering through Westminster Abbey, ambling down the way to the Tate, munching quiche, admiring Turner on display. This will come as no surprise to anyone, but Dive is a very astute art observer. I mumbled to Daughter No. 2 that all I was able to say was, "ooo, it's pretty." Or, "ooo, that man has no trousers." The statement was necessary to say because we were standing in front of a painting of a man in armor from mid-thigh up and nothing but his pasty white skin from there down. Dive hadn't noticed. He did suspect that people in waist-up portraits were really naked from the waist down--maybe he was right.

Hee hee. Daughter No.2 is a fabulous photographer, Robyn.

And I'd forgotten about the trouserless man!
I've walked past that painting a hundred times over the years and never noticed and yet both you and Mum caught sight of it and it was the first thing you noticed!
Women! Heehee.

Thank you for visiting us and giving us such a lovely day out.
And hugs to Daughter No.2 and Elizabeth, too.

Hi Dive. Don't you love the angles of these shots? I will do a brief post on the trouserless man. He actually has a name.

Gina, it really is wonderful. It adds that missing dimension.

Hey Alifan! We all enjoyed meeting you, too. I'm just sorry our day couldn't have lasted longer.

Pru, actually husband had arranged a business meeting that day, so he was off in another part of the city.

Lynn, evidently the shoe picture was an accident, but I thought it told such an interesting story. I'm not sure what it is yet, but I'm sure there's one there.

I had assumed he was an early newscaster. Watching the news is much more interesting armed with the knowledge that behind their desks all newscasters are naked from the waist down.

Long Live Anita Bowser

You know I occasionally check my hometown newspaper's website to scan the obituaries (morbid, I know, but I'm at that age). Over this past weekend, I read the obituary of Indiana State Senator Anita Bowser . She was a noted Democrat who championed causes protecting the neediest in the state's population. She was respected on both sides of the aisle for her intelligence and plain and outspoken approach to law making. The picture on her senate page is lovely. I remember none of those things about Anita Bowser . My first year or so in college was spent at a branch of Purdue University, and in the early 80s, Anita was a political science professor. She taught my American Government class my freshman year, and she was a mess. Somewhere in my old text book, I have a sketch of her drawn on a particularly dull day in class--her hose sagged at her ankles, her slip showed at least half an inch all the way around, her hair had been slept on but not brushed, and her bright red lip stic...

Happy Birthday...

to me! Update: Since you have asked, I only got one actual packaged gift, a beautiful hand-made bracelet from a friend, but both girls were home for the weekend, and we had dinner at the lake and a relaxing weekend. Thanks to all of you for your lovely wishes!

My Sitemeter is All Bloated and Not Quite Itself

I'm tempted to let it sit on the couch with its feet curled up under a blanket, a hot cup of coffee in hand, a block of cherry almond bark Chocolove within reach, and An Affair to Remember spinning in the DVD player. I'm one of those obsessive bloggers, the kind who checks her sitemeter as often as possible throughout the day, the kind who gauges the quality of her writing by the number of readers who regularly stop by. I've become less interested in the overall number of hits and more interested in the number of repeat hits. The return visitors are the ones I long for. When my sitemeter reads forty at the end of the day, and the majority of those hits are webpals who have conversed, I'm happy. Forty may seem low to many of you, but I've only been at this since August. To me, forty is a jackpot. A few days ago, I sat down at my laptop and discovered a number somewhere in the eighties. Eighties! Yippee! Yeeha ! Hoo-rah ! I've been discovered by the webworld , o...
