On Broadway

Because husband is away on a golfing trip this week, I am driving his car, partly because it's the one in the garage, all toasty and warm on these chilly mornings, and partly because it is equipped with Sirius radio. This week I have a world of music genres within my reach--just turn the dial and pick a tune--hip hop, pop, jazz, classical, blues, spiritual, easy listening (ick), classical. At first I thought I would listen to symphonies, but then I discovered Broadway.

The Broadway channel plays one delightful show tune after another, in no particular order. It's not all Oklahoma and State Fair--there is plenty on this channel I have never heard before, all mixed in with the classics. On the way to work yesterday, I heard M.U.E from 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (You'll have to look this one up because my charming and chaste site can't handle the lyrics, and if I posted them, you'd all fall out of your chairs from the shock), and at lunch I heard I Can Do Anything Better Than You Can, that great Berlin classic from Annie Get Your Gun.

Quickly becoming my favorite feature on the Broadway channel is the "ahmaazing" Seth Rudetsky. He's a Broadway expert, apparently, and full of stories and laughs, although the guy talks so quickly, I miss all but every 5th word. I drive down the highway and furrow my brow as he talks, trying to decipher his ramblings. Funny guy. Here he is to the right.

So, yay for Sirius radio and for Broadway tunes and for the fast-talking Seth Rudetsky and for at least a few days with a car that hands it all to me with the turn of a dial.

Woohoo!
I'll point Mum at this post. She loves show tunes, too.
Robyn; why do men have the better cars? I had this experience in my marriage too, it was a delight to drive his on occasion. I'm a bit off men at the moment (i'm sure it's a temporary affliction) as you'll see at Dive's.

I'm thinking you should get the good radio in your car too, Robyn.

How fun!
Robyn - Since you have to do all the cooking, I think you should get the better car all the time.

Dive, of course Mum loves show tunes. She's very cool.

Lynn, Sassy, and Rich, I can't complain about the car I normally drive--it's pretty nice, just doesn't have satelite radio.

#1, Yes, it's the gay guy, if we're going by his voice and his exclamations (not to stereotype).

I'm going to guess...um...a unicycle.

Cool am I Robyn, thank you!

I loved "Broadway" especially the Rocky Horror Show at the end, the transvestite was amazing!! although not all the OAP's appreciated it... tee ..hee.. as Amy would say...The lighting and sound was great, and the singing and costumes very glitzy...Loved Les Miserables songs again...

Looking forward to seeing "That'll be the day" on Sunday night.. 50's 60's music....

Alifan, enjoy the show Sunday. I have never seen Rocky Horror--just one of those things I missed over the years. I'll have to add it to the list.
do you listen to Howard Stern on Sirius radio?

I avoid Howard Stern and skip right past his channel as I'm heading for Broadway. Ew.

Happy Birthday To...

Pope Leo IX (the Pope) JCF Bach (German composer) Jane Russell (of Gentlemen Prefer Blonds fame) Daniel Carter Beard (founder of the Boy Scouts of America) Jean-Paul Sartre (French philosopher) Maureen Stapleton (Academy Award winning actress) Mariette Hartley (who?) Prince William of Wales (the prince) but most importantly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 45 years ago today, I was born in Alabama in a small town on the banks of the Tennessee River. Yesterday, someone asked me if my family has any birthday traditions. The answer is no. My family never cared very much, but I do remember a few birthday highlights. I was given a birthday party in the back yard when I was ten years old. Two years later, my sister got married on my birthday, so I was just a bit overlooked, although I did get a stuffed animal--it was a white Yorkshire terrier with an AM radio in its stomach. When I turned 20, a different sister took me to an outdoor performance of Dvorak's New World Sympho...

Right Brain Dominant

I am reading A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future , by Daniel H. Pink. I wouldn't have chosen this book had I been book hunting because I lean toward fiction—it was a gift from someone who, like me, is right-brain dominate. I haven't gotten very far, just far enough to learn that in Hippocrates' day, the left side of the brain was considered the true source of thought, the thing that separated us from the animals and made us human. It was the source of reason and logic. The right side was considered a useless left over, a parasite. Now we know that both sides of our brains are equally important and equally involved in our daily thoughts and functions. But some of us do seem to be governed by one side more strongly than the other. Me, sometimes I think the left side of my brain has completely atrophied, that the right side governs everything. But I am learning that I don't give that other side enough credit, that logical mathy side. As I read on ab...

Everybody Needs A Little Crème Brûlée

I went out to dinner with some friends the other evening and ordered crème brûlée for dessert. It was lovely—crispy sugar crust and creamy custard underneath. I'm a bit of crème brûlée fan and order it more often than I order any other restaurant dessert, which is not to say I always order dessert—only now and then. On my way home, I remembered I had a crème brûlée kit at home with ramekins, a torch, and a basic recipe. I love the torch. So, now I have made my favorite dessert at home, and I recommend that everyone have crème brûlée. It makes the world better. I used the recipe on the box, which was simple and basic. My only suggestion for improvement is to use less sugar for the caramelized crust. It was so thick, it was like chipping away at glass. An ice pick would have come in handy, or a diamond. Other recipes suggest 1/4 cup to be divided among six ramekins, making just over 1 tablespoon per serving. Crème Brûlée serves 4 1 cup heavy cream 2 extra large egg yolks (I used 3 re...
