Okey dokey. My first chapter has been posted in the contest. I have 23 votes at the moment, but I want more, please.

I voted! I voted! I voted for you!

Well, I gave your chapter a 10 and wrote nice things about it.

I saw that. thank you very much. I'm wondering though, if we all pop in and give the poor girl a 10, will it look a little funny? 10 is for perfect, and she's not perfect, not quite. I am trying not to be obsessed about watching the whole thing.

yer stuff is worthy of a 10, don't put yer own stuff doon leave that to others, I gave you a 1 due to lack of midget sex.

you know I'm kidding right?

you're a 10 robyn.
I'm going to, i did try but it wasn't straightforward at all and i didn't have time to work it out. Give us an idiot's guide and i'll do it gladly, you worthy author you. Are you reading my novel, Robyn? Well you should be! I was reading yours but you pulled it. Loved it.

Ah, Old K's a real sweetie isn't he? Love that cute little turn of phrase he has, too. Ahhh...

Thanks for the link, Robyn. It saved me searching through all those windows again.
Ten stars. No messing.

Dive, I can't thank you enough. Well, I probably could--I'll just say "thank you!" and let it go at that.

Old Knusdon, you're a dear. Thank you as well, and I'm sorry I couldn't include anything spicy there for you. It's one of 21 chapters, and there isn't a single spicy treat in the whole stinking thing.

Lynn, at gather.com there should be a spot in the upper right hand corner to sign up (free). My plan was to read your novel after I finished obsessing over my own, so I'll get right to it. Thanks for the compliment about mine. Sorry to pull the story before you were finished. I can send it to you if you really want it.

Good morning, Robyn.

Thank you for your thank you. It was my pleasure.
Hey, my Maryanne link still works but it only gives the first two chapters (which is when I set it up).
So when the competition's over and you're grinning like a fool at your prize, re-establishing the full link would be nice.

In the meantime, for anyone who hasn't printed off all 21 chapters like Rich has, the second chapter is still available on my sidebar.
Nope, can't see where to sign up. I am notoriously impatient, but even so i just can't see how to vote. Dive did your link take you to the voting page? Can you give it to me?

I'm just reviewing a book at the moment Robyn but as soon as i've finished that, i'll ask for your novel please yes.

Lynn, sorry this is so irritating. Here is a link to sign up. After you register, go to my story, and at the bottom, there is a place to click 1 through 10 and a place to leave a comment.

Robyn, I'd say that I'd do a cheer for you, but I think Old K did something even better.
Thanks Robyn...sigh....for some reason it doesn't want my vote. I tried five times, getting through easily to your excellent link but thereafter my username/email was taken so filled in again and again and finally got repeatedly Page Not Found. Sorry, i can't vote Robyn but i have tried at length and for the record, i would give it a NINE !!!!!
Scout said…
Sorry, Lynn, that this has been such a pain. It's nice of you to try, and it's great that you would thoughtfully give it a 9 and not just automatically give it a 10.
dive said…
Hey! No automatic about it.
You know what I think from our emails, so it's a very carefully considered ten!

Dive, I just read a very well-thoughtout comment by some guy, and he actually said my characters are underdeveloped. What's up with that? I think it's a flaw with just posting the first chapter--can't squeeze everything into the opening scene.

He did have a point about having Brittany at the table when Jean says bad things about the kid's father, though.

I'm with you on the first chapter thing, Robyn.
Maryann can't show her full character until she reacts to circumstance, and the circumstances she has to react to have yet to happen (or at least have yet to be revealed) in chapter one.

If you developed her fully in chapter one, there'd be nothing left to write about.

And as for Jean; friends and neighbours are like that. They're not perfect. It's real life.

Robyn, don't stress over that guy.

His point about Brit at the table might be valid in NeverNeverLand, but real people say dumb things in front of kids sometimes.

Your characters are very well developed, and very real world.

He's a dork.

See, Dive agrees with me. He just types faster.

JanieBelle and Dive, and can be such a freak about stuff like this, so stick around and say nice things to counteract the criticism that is sure to pop up over the next few days.

I'm really excited for you and your participation in this project, Robyn! I've been checking in to see the new comments and I just left one of my own. Did you take the novel down off your blog though? I was only halfway through it! I suppose I'll have to wait and buy it off a bookstore shelf :-)

Molly, thank you!!! Somebody voted yesterday and brought my rank down a bit, the jerk. I took the story offline because I understood from the contest rules that the full story couldn't appear anywhere else. If I tank in this contest, I'll put it back up.

Bring On the Bombs

In today's edition : I generally try to keep on top of cultural trends even if I don’t adopt them, but there is a growing movement that I have only just discovered. Not long ago, I was walking along in Berkeley, California while visiting my daughter, and I saw a signpost that had been covered with yarn, like someone had sewn a knitted scarf to it. It was colorful and randomly striped, and I pointed it out as if it were the most unusual thing in the world. That’s when my daughter explained the nature of what is known as yarn bombing. It’s when knitters attach something they’ve created to a public object, most often doing their deed stealthily and anonymously. They leave a “bomb,” so to speak, for no other purpose than to brighten up the place and to bring a little cheer to those passing by. Their work has been equated with graffiti, except that the woven yarn is not permanently installed and does no damage to the object it covers. And instead of signifying the territory of a street ...

Classic Green Bean Bake

In anticipation of Thanksgiving, I feel I must post a recipe with plenty of good old American tradition. The classic Green Bean Bake was invented in 1955 by Dorcas Reilly, a home economist who worked for the Campbell's Soup Company. A study was done determining that 50% of all Americans have eaten the classic Green Bean Bake, and 38% of those believe it is best served during the holidays, mainly Thanksgiving. So, for the other 50% and for those in other countries where this dish may be unfamiliar--my treat: The Classic Green Bean Bake serves 6 to 8 1 can Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup 1/2 cup milk 1 teaspoon soy sauce Dash of fresh pepper 1 20-oz. bag frozen cut green beans, thawed* 1 2.8 oz can French-fried onions -Preheat the oven to 350 F -In a casserole dish, combine the soup, milk, soy sauce and pepper. Stir in the green beans and half of the onions. -Bake until bubbling, about 25 minutes. Top with the remaining onions and bake for 5 more minutes. Serve hot. *Or cook 1 ...

Voting Now and Then

Here is a link to an editorial I have written about how I feel about voting. In preparation for this piece, I called my mother and talked to her about what her mother thought about having the right to vote. She explained something that is haunting and makes me cherish my right to vote even more. When the 19th amendment was ratified in 1920, my grandmother was just under the legal voting age at the time, but she would be of voting age before my mother was born five years later. During the first campaign in which she could have voted, though, there was a poll tax. After blacks were given the right to vote with the 15th amendment, some of the southern states like Alabama enacted poll taxes knowing full well the local blacks, Native Americans, and poor whites couldn't afford them. There was an exception to the tax called the "grandfather clause" allowing any male whose father had voted previously to vote for free. Of course, the only men who qualified under the clause were w...
